Lauren and Marc Get Married...Again

On Saturday, May 21, 2011 Marc Peter Bonaca, MD and Lauren Ross Cullings repeated their wedding vows at Villa di Maiano, Fiesole, Italy with their families and closest friends.

To say it was a beautiful event understates the magic of a May wedding in Tuscany.

One of my oldest and dearest friends, George Kates, brought his camera and shot all kinds of pictures of the event. We'll have lots of professional-grade pictures later, but George's are terrific and he was great to take the time to shoot them. Instead of writing a lot about the evening, I've created a web album from his pictures. Enjoy!

Friday 5/20/2011, The Civil Ceremony

Friday, was the actual wedding day. Scheduled for noon at Fiesole Town Hall, Marc and Lauren are headed off to do some preliminary pictures with the photographer. .And I had some conversation with wedding planner extraordinaire, Valentina . Jason and Carolyn hosted us all Thursday night at a great cocktail party in downtown Florence.

The ancient (Etruscan/Roman) town of Fiesole is about 6km northeast of Florence city center. It's a short drive from Villa di Maiano where Saturday's celebration was held and where the wedding party and many of the guests stayed.

Many of us headed for Town Hall about 11.30 and gathered outside to await the bride and groom

And on the dot of noon...ok, so it wasn't...they arrived.
The ceremony was administrated by the woman with the sash and assisted by a colleague as well as Valentina. Two witnesses, Carolyn (Maid of Honor) and Tomasso Mizzoni (Best Man) flanked the bride and groom.

Carolyn's signature on the marriage certificate was the final act and Dr. and Mrs. Bonaca turned to greet the crowd. A view from the pretty balcony where the ceremony had taken place.. We finished the day with an informal lunch back at Villa Maiano and began to make preparations for Saturday's big event..

Fattoria di Maiano

We made the move to Fattoria di Maiano yesterday afternoon and the dress came with us. Made in California, bought in Hingham and worn in Italy I love the New World to Old World connection.

Fattoria di Maiano, the site of both Friday's welcome dinner and Saturday's ceremony and celebration is a working olive and wine farm covering many acres of the rolling terrain just outside Florence. Here is the view from our balcony: . Downtown Florence is just to the right and out of view in this shot.

So here we are, settled and awaiting the rest of our guests.

We four, Lauren, Marc, Carolyn and I had a memorable dinner last night at a Cave di Maiano, just up the street. The owner chef presented us with a chef's choice of antipasti , followed by good wine and great food

San Martino Chapter 2

Well, I didn't get back to this yesterday and I wanted to add some more content about the wonderful night with the Mizzonis at San Martino before I moved the setting to Fattoria di Maiano the site of the wedding on Saturday.

As is so often true, memories are created unexpectedly. As I sat on a terrace with both girls, Marc, Jeanne and Mario , Luana , Paulo and their son Tommaso , I realized that this was our new extended family actually together for the first time..

Onward to Maiano!

San Martino

San Martino alla Palma, a small village outside Florence, is the home of some of Marc's relatives. All of us (we're still missing Jason Soules, Carolyn's husband, but he'll be here soon) were invited by Marc's first cousins Luana and Paolo Mizzoni for dinner last night. Here is a view of their home at the top of the hill with the cypress trees. The house, Villa dei le Berttuce, was built in the 13th Century and is home to the Mizzoni's and Marc's aunt and uncle Alda and Umberto Raffaelli. Another of Marc's uncles, Enzo Bonaca and his wife Malita also maintain a home there as well as in the house on Giacomo Zanella. The villa is a working farm, operated by Umberto, that produces olive oil, chianti and his pride and joy a wonderful Vin Santo. More on the Vin Santo, perhaps, in another post.

Marc proposed to Lauren at the end of a ski trip last January. When they'd returned to the villa from the mountains, Marc asked Lauren to go for a walk. He had a plan. Turns out the walk was a little more than he'd bargained for, but eventually they arrived at the small church in the village where he, on bended knee (yes, he did), asked Lauren to marry him. Her response was classic, "NO WAY!!" Marc's normally a very composed young man, but he acknowledges that this wasn't the reaction he was expecting. And his knee was beginning to hurt, so he assured her he meant it. Apparently she believed him and let him get up. Here's the spot: . And here they are with the villa in the background. Lauren says she doesn't remember the walk back.

The Beginning

So I've decided to start a blog about Lauren's wedding to Marc Bonaca. This romance began in Boston after the 2009 Boston Marathon, matured during Janice's fight against the breast cancer demon that took her life that October and produced a betrothal in Florence (Marc's father's home town), last February. The wedding will be a few kilometers from Florence in Fiesole next Saturday (well, Friday officially since there will be a civil ceremony at noon in Fiesole's town hall).

So this is the first of at least a few observations during what will be a wonderful and meaningful experience for all of us. I'll try to incorporate as many pictures as I can as I share it.

I've just arrived in Florence to beautiful, sunny and warm weather, a huge change from the mess I left behind in Boston. The kids, Lauren, Marc and [big sister] Carolyn arrived Sunday morning and have settled in at Marc's parents' apartment on Giacomo Zanella a couple of blocks from the walls of the city.
After a 'dust off' shower and quick nap for me, we're all headed for San Martino where Marc's cousins Paulo and Luana Missoni and their son (and Best Man) live for a casual dinner. This will be a real change from the first (and last) time we were there...last Thanksgiving. Then, it was cold, damp and rainy. Now it'll be in full bloom. Good.
